# 025: 2 Questions To Own Your Tech Writer Interview Process

Pssst! The 6-Figure Tech Writer newsletter just got a branding glow-up.

New look, same mission: ditch crappy pay. đź’…đź’°

¡Hola Tech Writing Friends!

Are you ready to ditch crappy pay?

Then let’s talk about something that doesn’t get covered in most interview prep guides.

Learn 2 strategic questions to ask… and when to ask them.

Screening Calls: Stop Playing Passive

When you’re in the first recruiter screening call and they ask, “Do you have any questions for me?”, don’t fumble the moment.

This is your chance to interview the process.

Here’s what to ask:

🗣️ “Can you walk me through the full interview process? (1) How many rounds; (2) What types of interviews; and (3) the timeline you're hoping to follow to make a decision?”

You deserve to know:

  • How many steps are involved

  • What types of interviews are ahead (Manager screen? Tech eval? Assignment? Cross-functional call with Product or Marketing?)

  • How long the process takes per candidate

This isn’t rude. It’s professional.

You're not begging for a job, my friend, you’re assessing whether this is a process you can commit to.

End-Stage Follow-Up: Don’t Limbo

Let’s say you’ve already had multiple calls. Maybe even submitted a writing sample.

It’s been a week. You’re still waiting.

Here’s what most people do:
Wait in silence. Hope for the best. Obsessively check email.

Here’s what 6-figure candidates do:
They follow up strategically... with confidence.

Try this instead:

🗣️ “Hi [Name], I know you’re likely wrapping up interviews with other candidates. Do you have a target date to complete final assessments and make a decision? Just want to be mindful of your timeline as I plan next steps.”

You’re not being pushy. You’re showing initiative. You’re making it easy for them to give you clarity.

TL;DR

  • Ask for the full interview breakdown early.

  • Follow up near the end and ask about their decision timeline.

  • Assume you're being evaluated, but act like you're evaluating them, too.

This is how confident candidates get jobs, and how tech writers level up into strategic operators who earn 6-figures.

And that's how you ditch crappy pay. Get your 6-figures!

¡Hasta luego!
